Gupshup Launches Self-Serve Voice AI Platform for Phone Calls
Gupshup, the messaging platform that already routes WhatsApp, RCS and SMS traffic for tens of thousands of businesses, opened up a self-serve console on September 3, 2026 for building AI voice agents that handle phone calls -- support, sales and operational calls -- with no code required and pricing starting at $0.035 a minute.
What Gupshup announced
Gupshup announced its Voice AI Platform on September 3, 2026, extending a business-messaging company best known for WhatsApp, RCS and SMS traffic into live phone calls for the first time as a dedicated, self-serve product. The platform lets a business build an AI voice agent that resolves support calls, qualifies and converts sales leads, and automates operational calls such as appointment scheduling, identity verification and payment reminders -- all through a no-code, prompt-based interface rather than a developer integration.
"For customer engagement in emerging markets, Voice AI drives universal access," said Beerud Sheth, co-founder and CEO of Gupshup, adding that the platform enables both cost savings and revenue growth and that Gupshup offers "the only unified self-serve platform for customer engagement across voice and messaging."

What the platform actually does
The self-serve builder covers the full lifecycle of a voice agent rather than just a single prompt box. Businesses configure the agent's voice, language, knowledge base and system prompt, then connect it to the workflows and tools their teams already use. Before an agent goes live, Gupshup provides pre-deployment testing through simulations and guardrails, so a business can catch bad responses before a real customer hits them. Once live, the platform surfaces analytics on success rates, customer satisfaction and language usage, alongside full transcripts, conversation history and debug logs for every call.
Two design choices stand out relative to most dedicated voice-agent startups. First, the platform is model-flexible: businesses can choose their own speech-to-text, text-to-speech and underlying LLM providers rather than being locked into a single stack Gupshup controls. Second, it supports both PSTN (regular phone-network) calls and WhatsApp voice calls from the same builder, and offers both cloud and on-premise deployment -- a detail aimed squarely at regulated or data-residency-sensitive customers in the banking, healthcare and government sectors Gupshup already serves through its messaging business.
Pricing and access
The Voice AI Platform is live now at voiceai.gupshup.io. Usage is priced starting at USD $0.035 (INR 3.50) per minute, and new users get 100 free minutes to test an agent before committing spend. That per-minute, self-serve pricing model mirrors how Gupshup already sells messaging credits, rather than the flat per-seat licensing or bespoke enterprise contracts common among contact-center voice-agent vendors -- consistent with a platform aimed at existing small and mid-sized messaging customers upgrading into voice, not just enterprise pilots.
The company behind the launch
Gupshup is not a new entrant testing the voice-AI waters -- it is a 20-plus-year-old conversational-messaging company retrofitting a new channel onto infrastructure it already runs at enormous scale. Founded in 2004 by Beerud Sheth, the company built its business first on SMS and later on WhatsApp Business messaging, becoming one of the CPaaS vendors Gartner tracks in its Competitive Landscape reports. Gupshup crossed unicorn status in April 2021 with a $100 million Series F round led by Tiger Global, followed by a further $240 million raise later that year from investors including Fidelity Management and Think Investments, taking its valuation to roughly $1.4 billion. According to its own release, the company now serves more than 50,000 businesses across over 100 countries and 25-plus industries, processing 10 billion interactions a month -- including 500 million voice calls a month even before this self-serve launch, presumably through existing custom voice deployments and call-routing infrastructure it already operated for large customers.
That existing voice volume is the real subtext of the announcement: Gupshup was already carrying half a billion voice calls a month for customers before today, but only through bespoke, sales-assisted deployments. Opening a self-serve, no-code console turns that into a product any of its 50,000-plus existing messaging customers can pick up directly, the same way WhatsApp Business API access became a self-serve add-on for Gupshup customers years after it first launched as an enterprise-only integration.
What this means for the voice AI industry
Messaging platforms are becoming voice-agent platforms
Gupshup joins Fireflies.ai and others in turning an existing communications business -- built on messaging or transcription -- into a live-voice product, rather than leaving voice agents to dedicated startups.
Emerging-markets pricing is now a stated strategy
Sheth's own framing -- "Voice AI drives universal access" in emerging markets -- signals Gupshup is chasing volume in price-sensitive regions where per-minute PSTN and WhatsApp voice pricing beats hiring human call-center staff outright.
Model lock-in is becoming a competitive weakness
Letting customers swap in their own speech-to-text, text-to-speech and LLM providers, rather than forcing a single proprietary stack, is a direct response to buyers who no longer want to bet a whole voice-agent deployment on one vendor's models.
